Susan R. Colpitts is a Founder of Signature, serves as Chief Financial Officer, and leads the firm’s Client Services team. She is an expert in the technical areas of financial, tax, trust, and estate planning and holds the premier AICPA designation of Personal Financial Specialist. With a growing resume of accolades, she was recognized by Research magazine as one of five members of the 2012 Advisor Hall of Fame. In addition, the United Way of South Hampton Roads acknowledged Susan as the 2011 Volunteer of the Year, and the YWCA of South Hampton Roads honored her as a Woman of Distinction in the area of Finance in 2009. In 2004, Worth magazine identified Susan as one of the 100 top wealth advisers in the country.

Prior to founding Signature with Anne Shumadine, Susan was a tax consultant with the law firms Shumadine and Rose, P.C. and McCandlish Holton, P.C., and the accounting firm Price Waterhouse.

Susan is an avid supporter of the arts, education, and community causes. Her volunteer activities include being a current Board member and past Chair of the United Way of South Hampton Roads; Chair of the United Way’s Women’s Leadership Council; member of the Planned Giving Advisory Board at the University of Virginia’s McIntire School of Commerce; Trustee of the Eastern Virginia Medical School Foundation; past Chair of the Virginia Symphony Orchestra and past President of the Virginia Symphony Foundation.

Susan is a graduate of the University of Virginia, where she received a bachelor’s degree with distinction in English, and a master’s degree in Accounting with a concentration in Taxation.
Married with three daughters, Susan enjoys reading, yoga, cooking, walking the family dogs, and quiet weekends on the Eastern Shore.
